Our neighbors up north in Portland at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) were recently featured on the New England Cable Network (NECN) for their efforts to give a boost the the New England seafood market. The short segment highlights GMRI’s efforts to market sustainable seafood caught by local fishermen in the Gulf of Maine. Currently GMRI’s “Responsibly Harvested” program partners with Shaw’s Supermarkets, Hannaford’s, the Big Y and Sanders Fish Market along with several Portland-based restaurants to advertise and sell seafood that was caught using sustainable methods off New England’s shores. Special emphasis is placed on underutilized species for their economic and environmental value.
“According to an impact report from GMRI, between 2011 and 2013 products that are part of the sustainable seafood program brought in $52 million in sales.”
